In order for us to provide you with the best results possible, please make sure to follow the below steps to prepare your files before uploading. These steps will ensure the best possible master.
1. If ordering mastering, please make sure to get your mix as close as possible to how you want the final track to sound. Only a great mix will create a great master. Mastering will add the extra sheen, polish and gloss to your mix, but it won’t drastically change a bad mix into a good mix. If you are having trouble getting your mix to a place where you want it to be, you may want to consider ordering our mixing service.
2. Please make sure that you have no limiting or heavy compression on the master bus. A small amount of master bus compression is ok, though we may have better tools at our disposal in the analog domain that will provide better results. If you like the sound or mojo of a particular compressor, or heavy mix bus compression is part of an overall desired effect for the track, let us know in the your order notes. We may request that you bounce two versions (one with the compressor, and one without)
3. Please make sure that you are not clipping the master bus. Most engineers ask that you provide a pre-master that is peaking somewhere between -3 to -6 db. This is a good rule of thumb however, as long as your master bus is not exceeding the 0db ceiling you’re good! (we have the ability to gain stage the mix if necessary before processing)
4. Please make sure to bounce your session in the same bit rate and sample rate that you are working in. As a default we will provide all digital and vinyl masters at 24bit 48kHz (except for files destined for CD which come at 16bit 44.1kHz) and do prefer to receive the files at this bit depth and sample rate or higher. Please don’t upload 16bit files or MP3’s!
5. Please don’t forget to specify the which format(s) that you are looking to release on. Different formats require different approaches and files. We offer mastering for Digital, Vinyl and CD. We will provide a suitable file of the master for each format you require, inclusive of the price.
6. The loudness wars are (mostly) over! We will aim to get your music to a nice loud level without sacrificing dynamics. Louder is not necessarily better.
7. If you have any questions, or are unsure about any of the above please feel free to reach out and we will be happy to answer your query.
